Art historian and native English speaker

University College London (MA) Art history (2014)

University of Auckland (BA) Art history & European Studies (2011)

It was her passion for Dutch art and culture that lured Anna Lawrence to the Netherlands in the first place. Once there, she started learning Dutch so she could undertake more in depth art historical research. Anna’s love of the Dutch language has however expanded far beyond its original scope and it is now art history that helps tremendously with the Dutch texts she translates.

Anna is a writer and translator for museums and cultural institutions in the Netherlands and abroad. Her time at the Hermitage Amsterdam, Christies Amsterdam and the House of Six, working in Dutch speaking environments, helped further nuance her understanding of the language. Finally, out of a desire to share her passion for art and culture with others, she teaches art history at the Vrije Academie.

Anna is experienced in writing and translating a wide variety of content to a high standard. Her experience with exhibition texts in particular has taught her to express complex ideas concisely, always keeping to the character or word count set by her clients. When translating, Anna eloquently captures the mood of the original author and has received considerable positive feedback for her efforts. Apart from her capabilities as an academic writer, her professional work includes exhibition texts, audio tours, press releases, subtitles, pamphlets, web content and books, each with their own unique requirements. Finding the perfect tone of voice to suit the context and intended audience is something she prides herself on.
